First description of the project:
Where: Kaliningrad
Who: The group "Idushie vmeste" (walking together)
Why?: we want to do fieldwork considering the use and reproduction of national (Russian/Soviet) symbols among this group of young people in Kaliningrad. This group is one of many local offices. The "central" office is in Moscow. Kaliningrad which is located in the outskirts of the Russian Federation will serve as a field of study also of the center-periphery perspective. How do peripherical groups redistribute/represent "central" ideas?

PORNOGRAPHY INVESTIGATION FAILED

We have already informed you that Vasiliy Yakemenko, the leader of “Idushie Vmeste”, a pro-presidential youth movement, sent a letter to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Moscow with a request to investigate the activities of Evgeniy Sorokin and the director of the “Ad Marginem” publishing house for slander. The investigative authorities did not find any pornographic materials in Vladimir Sorokin’s novel “Lyod” (“Ice”). The office of the Public Prosecutor of Moscow denied the request for initiating a criminal case against the writer. The expert, who studied the book, reported that “Lyod” contains no signs of pornographic materials.

However Sorokin has other books that arise investigative interest, such as “Goluboye Salo” (“Blue Fat”). This book has already caused an initiation of a criminal case against the writer for “distribution of pornographic materials”. Preliminary examination of “Goluboye Salo” showed that the novel does contain passages of pornographic character.

On Monday, July 29, Evgeniy Sorokin will give evidence in relation to his novel. This information has been confirmed by Anton Konstantinov, an investigator who will be interrogating the writer. Apparently, Konstantinov had called Sorokin in person and invited the author of “Goluboe Salo” for a conversation. Alexander Ivanov, the head of “Ad Marginem” publishing house, has already been to the Public Prosecutor’s office of Moscow. His company is responsible for publishing Sorokin’s books, which are believed to contain pornography. Thus, in spite of the partial failure of the investigators in their fight against Sorokin the problem continues to exist. Even if “Goluboye Salo” proves to be pornography-free, law enforcement agents will still have three more attempts at Sorokin’s “Norma”, “Pervyi Subbotnik” and “Serdtsa Chetyrekh” novels.

At the same time Sorokin is not going to be alone in his fight for freedom. The famous Russian advocate Genry Reznik has agreed to defend the writer in court and one of the representatives of the US Department of State stated that Americans are worrying about the freedom of creative work in Russia.

We will continue updating you on the development of this unprecedented conflict.
