Entering the myth of America by seeking and receiving (as male and female) becomes like a love affair. And in spite of the latent conflicts in the love affair, you can still keep it going, by communicating in a subtle way. But if the relationship breaks down and you don't get what you set out to find, it can become bitter.

I ain't gonna take none of your foolin' around,

I ain't gonna take none of your puttin' me down
I put a spell on you - 'cause your mine!

This is a love song, but by interpreting its message as addressed to America, instead of to a woman, it comes out as a song, sung by a man who tried hard, but ... did not make it. He's singing to the land "I ain't gonna take none of your foolin' around", that is, giving your goods to others, "I ain't gonna take none of your puttin' me down", keeping me on the bottom instead of lettng me rise to the top. So he puts a spell on her - America - because she's his.
