Chr. Michelsen Institute is an independent, non-profit
research institution and a major international centre in policy-oriented
and applied development research. The geographical focus is Sub-Sahara
Africa, Southern and Central Asia, the Middle East, the Balkans and
South America. CMI is committed to a balance between applied and
theoretical research. Focus is on development and human rights issues
and on international conditions that effect such issues. CMI research
intends to assist policy formulation, improve the basis for
decision-making and promote public debate on international development
issues. The 40 CMI researchers are social scientists - anthropologists,
economists and political scientists - with a few sociologists,
geographers and historians. Most CMI-researchers have substantial
experience from operational work in developing countries and in
international organisations. CMI has wide experience in evaluating aid
projects, programmes, organisations and strategies. The institute has
led numerous large international multidisciplinary studies. CMI enjoys
an extensive network of international contacts, and has formal
co-operation agreements with various research institutions in Africa,
